My name is Melissa Gopp. I help people navigate trauma by voicing and sharing our stories.
One of the big reasons I created Blue Venus Rising was to relieve the pressure I’ve felt to keep silent around certain parts of my story. I have yet to publicly share what I would consider to be my full story, but I’ve been blessed with friends and groups who have held safe space for me to process it, write it, and speak it.
My vision is to pay it forward by creating an online version of that safe space.
Why Blue Venus Rising?
Blue Venus Rising is all about raising the feminine voice! Venus represents all things feminine, and in photographs, the planet often appears blue—the same color as the fifth chakra energy center located at the throat.
I like to look at these wheel-shaped energy centers called chakras from ancient Indian thought as another way to think about what’s happening in the body and the mind. The blue, fifth chakra that inspired Blue Venus Rising is the seat of communication, finding your voice, and self-expression.
Sharing when it’s tough is what I do. For better or worse, it often comes naturally for me. In addition to the healing catharsis I feel from my own sharing, what inspires me are the stories that get let loose in return by the people—often women—with whom I share.
Professionally, I worked nine years as senior writer and editor for a DC-based maternal health nonprofit. My writing has appeared in Yoga Journal, The Writer, JaxMomsBlog, Divorcemag.com, and Community Health Forum magazine. I am not a therapist, attorney, or any other sort of divorce or mental health professional. I am a beach bum at heart and passionate about using my writing and experiences to help people navigate life’s challenges.
